Bedfordshire,
Huntingdon and Peterborough (Pevsner Buildings of England S.)
The varied architecture of this east Midland area ranges from
the Norman glory of Peterborough cathedral and notable Early
English churches to many fine Elizabethan and Jacobean mansions.
The finest of these is Houghton House but the most spectacular
is Burghley, of palatial proportions in a perfect landscape
setting by Capability Brown. Southill and Woburn Abbey display
the range and excellence of Georgian houses and landscaped gardens
while Wrest Park and Luton Hoo look back to eighteenth-century
French architecture from opposite ends of the nineteenth-century.
More recently, Whipsnade Zoo exemplifies fine work of the 1930s
by Berthold Lubetkin.
100
Walks in Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire (100 Walks S.)
Each book in this series features 100 circular walks ranging
from 2-12 miles. The walks have a map, points of interest, and
places to eat and drink en route, plus suggestions for easy
car parking. This volume covers the area from Peterborough to
Cambridge and from Bedford to Luton.
Bedford's
Motoring Heritage
This is a history of a previously undocumented part of Bedford's
history that has touched the lives of many. The rich heritage
of pictures and other information about private motoring in
Bedford since the turn of the 20th century is revealed here
for the first time. Photographs and adverts illuminate local
car transport from the leisurely Golden Age of pre-World War
II motoring to the modern era of near-universal car ownership.
The authors also look at early changes in the street scene and
in street furniture brought about by the motor car, road signs,
garage buildings and signs, traffic lights, better road surfaces,
and so on. Driving licenses and tests, as well as the growth
of driving schools, also figure. The book brings the story up
to more recent times, and the vast expansion of car ownership.
Drastic changes to Bedford as the planners tried, in vain, to
give drivers unimpeded access to the town centre are also documented,
as well as the move of garages away from the centre to the outskirts,
and the decline of traditional petrol station forecourts. With
its varied content and many illustrations, this is valuable
reading for anyone interested in Bedford's history.
The
Hidden Places of the Chilterns: Including Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire
and Hertfordshire
Covers the Chilterns and the main counties, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire,
and Hertfordshire. The Chilterns are a rich combination of chalk
grassland and beech, and this work explores its scenic beauty
as well as giving advice on the best places to eat and places
of particular interest. Tour
Bedfordshire.
