Cheltenham:
a History
George III came to Cheltenham for the waters. So did Alfred
Lord Tennyson, and Liszt performed in its Assembly Rooms. The
Reverend Charles Dodgson met his Alice there, and wrote about
her in his other persona as Lewis Carroll. Close by, the ordinary
people lived pretty much as they had for thousands of years,
getting by with or without the gentry.
Cheltenham
Circular Footpath (Walkabout S.)
The Circular footpath is just over 25 miles long, encircles
Cheltenham and is based on existing rights of way. The route
passes through some very attractive countryside.
Cheltenham's
Lost Heritage
Some 350 to 400 buildings of historical importance have been
lost in Cheltenham over the last two centuries. Although this
is only a fraction of the town's building stock, it has certainly
left a visual impression of complete devastation in some areas.
This visually stunning new book, written by architectural historian
Oliver Bradbury, showcases over 100 of the best lost buildings,
some well remembered and much missed, others completely forgotten.
A huge range of illustrations, many paired as 'past and present',
document the changing scene. Regency pastiche or rampaging Modernism:
to choose from either presents a permanent dilemma for a town
such as Cheltenham.
Cheltenham
at War (Britain in Old Photographs S.)
During World War II, photographic film was rationed and photography
was strictly controlled, but despite these limitations, many
pictures of the war were taken and survive. This volume collects
over 200 images of Cheltenham at war, focusing on the people
of the area.
Cheltenham
Races in Old Photographs (Britain in Old Photographs S.)
A collection of black and white photographs which span the history
of horse racing at Cheltenham. Each photograph is captioned,
giving names and dates where possible and the pictures themselves
are drawn from family albums, local collections and professional
photographer's archives.
