County
Durham (Pevsner Buildings of England S.)
The premier monument is Durham Cathedral, greatest of English
Norman churches. Lovers of the Middle Ages will also seek out
the county's exceptional Anglo-Saxon churches, while many of
its great castles, Brancepeth, Raby, Auckland, Lambton, conceal
palatial Georgian and Victorian interiors. The landscape varies
dramatically, from the wilds of Teesdale and Weardale, in the
west, to the pioneering industrial ports of Sunderland and Hartlepool
on the coast, including fine gentry houses and stone-built market
towns. South Tyneside and northern Cleveland, historically part
of County Durham, are also covered.

Bike Guide - County Durham
Durham is a county little appreciated outside it's borders,
or even by it's own inhabitants, but it contains riding of a
quality not to be missed. This guide contains 28 routes of a
wide variety, including easy family rides and features the two
highest public roads in England. County Durham’s disused
railway cycle routes feature in this guide. Tour

County
Durham Strange But True (In Old Photographs S.)
This new book about County Durham illustrates and describes
people, places and incidents that are unusual, odd or extraordinary.
We discover the truth about flamboyant or eccentric characters,
curious buildings, strange place names, such as Pity Me and
No Peace?, weird weather, mazes, standing stones and holes in
the ground, unusual customs, and so on. Local folklore and legend
are also examined, to show how real events have been exaggerated
and embroidered over the years: an example is the story behind
Hartlepool's unfortunate monkey. Using a range of illustrations,
from old and recent photographs to maps, prints, paintings and
engravings, Woodhouse tells an entertaining story, an alternative
history of County Durham that will fascinate residents and visitors
alike.
The
Hidden Places of Northumberland & Durham (Hidden Places Travel
Guides)
Northumberland has much to offer the visitor with the Cheviot
Hills, the Kielder Forest Park, Hadrian's Wall and the North
Northumberland Heritage Coast which, of course includes Bamburgh
Castle, Holy Island and the Farne Islands. County Durham has
a rich industrial heritage particularly in mining, steel and
shipbuilding some of which is now in the relatively new county
of Tyne & Wear, but it also possesses the historical city
of Durham with its magnificent cathedral and castle and, to
the north, the beautiful scenery of Weardale, Teesdale and the
northern Pennines. Tour
