Eastbourne Past and PresentEastbourne Past and Present A seaside resort built By gentlemen For gentlemen, Eastbourne has withstood the tides of change better than many of its rivals. Its original nineteenth century architects devised a settlement of wide and leafy villa-lined boulevards and, despite the depredations of the Second World War, when it suffered more air-raid damage than any other town in south-east England, Eastbourne retains much of that early grandeur today. In Eastbourne Past & Present, David Arscott contrasts scenes portrayed in archive photographs and old picture postcards with our restless modern townscape. Taking a route from the shopping centre and the South Street area, along the seafront and Seaside to the Old Town and the Meads, he discovers changes and continuities which will fascinate those who have lived here all their lives and will give newcomers and visitors a deeper understanding of this popular Empress of Watering Places.

Eastbourne Speedway75 Years of Eastbourne Speedway From that inconspicuous beginning in 1928 Eastbourne Speedway has grown to become one of the leading, most popular and well-supported speedway tracks in the country which today proudly takes its place among the Elite League clubs. Apart from the War years and four years in the late 1960s the Arlington track has seen speedway every year making it the longest-serving speedway track in the country having recently celebrated it's 75th anniversary. For the spectators, the facilities have changed from none at all to luxurious stands and glass-fronted restaurants. The Eastbourne Eagles as a team first came in to being in 1937 for a series of challenge matches. In 1938 it won the first league it ever entered, the Sunday Amateur Dirt Track League. Since then, it has known the highs and lows of speedway, the euphoria and the heartbreaks, winning more titles but also coming bottom of the league. This lavishly illustrated volume is the story of Eastbourne speedway, the track at Arlington and the riders who have ridden there which, apart from its crop of youngsters, have included such names as Charlie Dugard, a name synonymous with Eastbourne, George Newton, Tiger Hart, Wally Green, Ivan Mauger, Kelly Moran, Joe Screen to the 2000 World champion Mark Loram. This is an essential read for all those interested in the history of the sport.
