The Grantham JournalThe Grantham Journal The Changing Face of Grantham is a fascinating account of the places, events and people that have shaped the history of the town over the last 100 years. Over 300 photographs provide a graphic record of the generations who have lived and worked here, and they also show streets and thoroughfares, houses and public buildings, shops and factories that have vanished or been altered almost beyond recognition. Published to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Grantham Journal, the book uses the newspaper's unrivalled collection of photographs to tell the story of the town and its people. Author John Pinchbeck recalls the forces of change that have transformed the town. The pictures he has selected show changing types of transport and fashion, the spread of building on the outskirts, and the developing character of individual streets and areas as they took on the form that is familiar today. Modern photographs are compared with archive images to demonstrate the astonishing growth and redevelopment that have occurred within living memory. Most aspects of Grantham's daily life in the past are recalled - hospitals and schools, work and sports, shopping and church-going. Extraordinary episodes are remembered, as well as remarkable individuals who contributed so much to the tradition of the town.

Around GranthamAround Grantham (Archive Photographs: Images of England S.) This fascinating collection of more than 200 photographs and postcards will appeal to anyone with an interest in the period of Grantham's history from the middle of the Victorian era until the 1960s. It contains pictures taken by several of the most notable local photographers that plied their trade in the town during this period, portraying an age that will appear to those in modern day Grantham to be a less hurried lifestyle. Children could stand in the middle of the road to have their photograph taken and tradesmen moved their goods either by horse and cart or by a railway system that linked towns and villages throughout the country. Starting at South Witham on the Rutland and Lincolnshire border, the reader is taken on a journey up the ancient Great North Road, through the market town of Grantham, and as far north as the village of Long Bennington. This selection of images will bring back memories of Grantham and introduce newcomers and younger generations to the area's past.
