Malawi
(Bradt Travel Guides S.)
Tour Malawi. An introduction for all visitors to this explorable,
affordable and tranquil African country, whether discovering
little-visited mountains, forests and game reserves or relaxing
by the main attraction, Lake Malawi. Wildlife and bird identification,
conservation areas, game and forest reserves and national parks
up and down the lake are all covered in depth. In common with
the rest of southern Africa, Malawi is suffering from the effects
of drought. Tourists will see little of the much-publicised
famine, but the warm welcome they receive is a reminder of how
much the country needs its foreign visitors. This guide covers
everything a visitor should need to know, from overland routes
into and around Malawi, local travel networks, maps and town
plans, to wildlife-viewing opportunities and accommodation,
from simple rest houses to luxurious game lodges. It is highly
focused on independent travellers' needs, including health and
safety and local language.
Spectrum Guide to Malawi An exceptional guide to Malawi that goes far beyond the bare details provided in other travel guides. The authors clearly have a wealth of experience about the country and an affinity with the people.
This book provides a fascinating insight into all apsects of Malawi and it people, lavishly illustrated with photographs to bring things to life.
A great source of information before you go and while travelling, a fabulous memento when you return home.
The Birds of Malawi: An Atlas and Handbook The rich bird life of Malawi, ex-Nyasaland, has long been one of the better-documented avifaunas of Africa, since Belcher (1930) and then Benson and Benson (1977). This book brings the picture up-to-date, with detailed accounts of the 650 species known (including nearly 100 migrants from Eurasia). For each, there are sections on distribution, ecology, status and movements, conservation, breeding seasons (where applicable) and taxonomy, the whole based on extensive fieldwork supported by some 700 published references. There are clear atlas maps for all but vagrants, as well as details of ringing recoveries and a gazetteer of 400 localities. In 80 pages, the introductory chapters review such topics as vegetation and major bird habitats, biogeography, conservation and a history of ornithological exploration in Malawi. 16 pages of colour photos illustrate the habitats of Malawi, as well as a dozen of the more interesting bird species. About the authors: Francoise Dowsett-Lemaire and Robert Dowsett have an unequalled knowledge of the birds of Malawi..
