NottinghamNottingham: Life in the Postwar Years A nostalgic look back at Nottingham, focusing on the thirty years after the end of the Second World War. This was a time of change for the city, when many historic properties disappeared to be replaced by Maid Marian Way and the Victoria and Broadmarsh shopping centres. Douglas Whitworth was on hand to capture the changing scene - old streets, apparently unchanged for centuries, their demolition, and the new buildings arising in their place. Major industries that shaped the city and employed so many people in the postwar period - such as Boots, Players and Raleigh, are also illustrated, together with shops and small businesses. Images of leisure and entertainment include evocative portraits of the famous Goose Fair. This fine collection of photographs will surprise and delight anyone who lived in Nottingham in the late 1940s, '50s, '60s and early '70s; anyone who moved here more recently will be amazed at the dramatic physical and social changes that the city has seen.

The Meadows NottinghamChanging Times: The Meadows (Nottingham) (Tempus Oral History) The Meadows Nottingham. From the hustle and bustle of Arkwright Street, its shops and trolley buses, or the clatter of gun factory workers' footsteps on King's Meadow Road, to a child's world of playing 'lurky' in the streets, or watching Penny Pictures at the Bridgeway Hall, The Meadows remembered recaptures the everyday lives of 'Meadows born and bred folk' in their own words.

Nottingham ArchivesNottingham (Archive Photographs: Then & Now) The city of Nottingham has changed dramatically over the twentieth century with many historic buildings disappearing, old streets being altered by new developments and exciting new projects taking shape. Local historian Douglas Whitworth looks at these changes by pairing more than eighty pictures of city life with an equivalent modern image and describing the contrast between the two in informative captions. Perhaps one of the most famous institutions in Nottingham is the company founded by Jesse Boot in the late nineteenth century. The Boots shop on Pelham Street that opened in 1893 was the forerunner of all the company's major stores. The transformation of Boots into the country's most well-known chemist is typical of the great change that Nottingham has witnessed. With the face of Nottingham being transformed so rapidly this captivating collection of images is valuable as a record of change at the end of the millennium. It will evoke memories of the city's past and inspire people of all ages with interest in their local history.
