William Livingston - Publisher

William Livingston was the co-founder of The Fife Free Press, Kirkcaldy's first weekly paper. Since its first appearance on January 28, 1871, the Press has gone on to become one of Scotland's most prominent local newspapers. Livingston was born in Kirkcaldy in 1837 and at a young age became an apprentice on the town's fortnightly Fifeshire Advertiser. After rising through the ranks to become the Advertiser's overseer, he and colleague James Strachan decided to set up their own weekly newspaper.

The Fife Free Press and Kirkcaldy Guardian quickly gained popularity, with its circulation rising to over 2000 within a year. Since Livingston's death in 1919, Strachan and Livingston has amassed several other Fife titles including the Glenrothes Gazette, the East Fife Mail and the Fife Herald, dominating local newspaper coverage across the Kingdom. The company became part of the Johnston Press group in 1971.
